How to Remove Chrome Extensions

5 min read · Updated 8/20/2026

How to remove an extension, remove one you cannot remove, and clean up what it left behind.

The normal way

Right-click the extension's toolbar icon and choose "Remove from Chrome", or open chrome://extensions and click Remove on the card. Confirm the dialog and it is gone from that profile.

If there is no Remove button

An extension installed by your organisation shows "Installed by your administrator" and cannot be removed from within Chrome. On a managed work device this is expected; contact IT. On a personal device it usually means a policy was set by unwanted software — check your system's policy settings and run a reputable malware scan.

Disable instead of remove

If you might want it back, toggle it off rather than removing it. Disabled extensions consume no memory and keep their settings.

Clean up after removal

Removing an extension does not always revoke its access to data it already stored elsewhere. If it had an account, sign in on its website and delete the account. Then review chrome://settings/content and your Google account's third-party access list.

Audit regularly

Open chrome://extensions once a quarter and remove anything you did not deliberately use. Each one is a standing permission grant.

Frequently asked questions

How do I remove a Chrome extension?

Open chrome://extensions, find the extension and click Remove, or right-click its toolbar icon and choose "Remove from Chrome".

What if I cannot remove an extension?

It is probably installed by policy or bundled with desktop software. Check chrome://policy, uninstall the related desktop program, and scan for adware before trying again.

Does removing an extension delete its data?

Not always. Some extensions leave cookies, site data or a synced account behind, so clear the related site data and delete the account if you created one.
